Alan K Matsumoto, MD
Alan Matsumoto, MD, is partner in Arthritis and Rheumatism Associates (ARA), one of the largest single specialty rheumatology practices in the country, with 18 full time physicians and 5 offices in Washington DC and Maryland. At ARA, he serves as a member of the Executive Committee and is the Director of Laboratory Services and the Director of Information Technology for the practice, directing ARA’s implementation of its electronic health record. He is responsible for quality measures reporting for the practice.
Dr Matsumoto completed his fellowship at Johns Hopkins University Division of Rheumatology, spending 5 years in the laboratory of Dr Douglas Fearon. He then joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins and moved to ARA after nine years. He remains on the part time clinical faculty. While at Hopkins, in addition to seeing patients, he directed the rheumatology teaching program at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and conducted clinical trials of novel therapeutic agents. He is past president of the DC Rheumatism Society and is a member of the Registries, Health Information and Technology Committee of the American College of Rheumatology.
Dr Matsumoto’s research interest is in new therapeutics for rheumatoid arthritis. ARA has a large and active clinical research program and he is an investigator in numerous clinical trials. Dr Matsumoto’s experience in both academic and private practice medicine brings a unique perspective to clinical issues facing rheumatologists.
